An interesting take or point of view here – thank you for opening the debate.
Like you I find the racism and elitism an issue and one which needs calling out.
However, the Meghan and Harry thing can (possibly) confuse things greatly. They have both withdrawn from their “Royal” positions to pursue a more personal set of objectives.
Good on them.
The Oprah interview was interested but highlighted some very challenging perspectives, not least the alleged comments from an unnamed royal about the colour Harry and Meghan’s child. A comment which is indefensible.
On listening to the couple refer to this incident, however, they were unclear about when the comment was made and to whom. As I said the comment itself is indefensible however “context” is also relevant. It has been suggested that the comment was made before Meghan’s pregnancy and possibly before their wedding. The context being a frank recognition about how some of the more right wing press would present the birth of a future child. As we did see, there were some deplorable characterisations in there press. Harry claimed in the interview that he told Meghan about this historic discussion, but Meghan presented it as being said before she gave birth. Obviously I wasn’t privy to that discussion, but neither were 90% of those commenting on it.
To reiterate any such comment is deeply troubling since it reflects what is seen as being publicly important. It matters little whether the context was one of being prepared for media response or of personal ignorance.
However, this was not the only inconsistency about “facts” in that interview.
The suggestion that Harry and Meghan were married in a private ceremony a day before the public one, for example. Ok, they may have had a private blessing, but the actual marriage ceremony cannot not be in doubt … it’s a British legal thing.
There are other differences in perspective presented in that interview which we can leave for now. However, the issue of naming of the couples child is, again from a Brit perspective is not, in my opinion, about race or class or any thing other than personal family history.
The name Lilibut was a personal ‘nick name’ used by Prince Phillip for the Queen. Coming as close to the death of Prince Philip as it did, the choice of that name touched a nerve within public consciousness.
Whilst Harry and Meghan stated that had discussed the use of that name with The Queen, a statement from the Palace suggested that it was more of a telling than a discussion and a stated video call between the parties did not happen.
Again who really knows?
But, the publication of Prince Charles’ accounts showing that he had supported his son financially after the “Split” and not as was claimed in that interview, “cut them off” added fuel to the anti Harry and Meghan sentiment in the UK.
As another commentator has noted, since embarking on their new careers, Harry and Meghan need to keep their names in the headlines. Once people stop talking about them their celebrity value drops.
That’s a reality all those relying on the media to promote their work and businesses.
