Celebrate your Flawsome Self
And stop comparing yourself to others
“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” Coco Chanel
So, i’m enjoying an bit of T.V. time when the adverts pop onto the screen. I see what appears to be a slightly air-brushed Halle Berry talking about an eyebrow trimmer. Before I continue, I will say, I like some of the roles she’s starred in, I even thought Catwoman was OK. However, I was dismayed by this advert and the scripted Tag-Line Ms Berry delivered.
“Be Flawless — Be You!”
Putting aside the fact that the advert focuses on the media idea of female attractiveness, flawlessly coiffured women, straight white teeth and not a blemish in sight, it was the message that really got to me.
“Be Flawless — Be You” could be understood to mean unless you are flawless you are not you. Or, more scary the idea that flawlessly trimmed eyebrows are what defines you.
Comparing yourself to others.
It starts young, this comparison thing.
We notice similarities and differences between things, situations and people. We start to compare ourselves and our behaviours against the standards set by those who we deem to be arbiters of what is right or good; beautiful or ugly.
